Advocacy Approaches in Domestic Violence Transitional Housing
European Conference on Domestic Violence (ECDV) Symposium 2025 Presentation
Description: Housing support is crucial for domestic violence survivors facing economic and housing insecurity. Domestic violence transitional housing (DVTH) addresses these needs through time-limited housing paired with comprehensive advocacy. Little research has documented the goals of the service model or advocacy approach of DVTH services. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with DVTH staff (n = 22) across five states in the USA. Findings revealed variability in program structures. Common eligibility criteria included DV history and low income, with variations in family structure, substance misuse, and transportation access. The survivor-driven advocacy approach focused on housing stability, safety, support, healing, autonomy, and economic stability. Challenges included affordable housing shortages, staff turnover, and inconsistent implementation of voluntary services.
