Description: This session examines equity in social work competency assessments using pre- and post-test data from MSW students (2020–2024), revealing demographic disparities and highlighting potential structural inequities. Attendees will explore potential biases in competency assessments and learn targeted, evidence-based strategies to promote fair and equitable evaluations in social work education.

Our study found no testing effect, as students who only took the post-test performed no differently than those who completed both the pre- and post-tests, confirming that pre-tests provide a reliable baseline measure of MSW competencies. At the same time, our study also found that pre-tests revealed early gaps—especially for BIPOC students and men, who often face disparities on licensing exams—underscoring the pre-tests value as a tool to identify and support students sooner and help close equity gaps before graduation and licensure.
