Summer Tunes

Summer is upon us!  At the College of Social Work, we hope you have fun and relaxing times planned for yourself and your loved ones.  We asked College faculty and staff to share some of the favorite summertime jams they’ll be listening to as they celebrate the season.

About Damn Time by Lizzo

“I am totally digging the new track from Lizzo.  This is the get back into living-traveling-doing summer song.  The hook reminds me of the music I heard on the radio growing up, makes the adult me want to dance off winter, and puts the past two years into perspective for me!”

Dena Ned, Associate Professor (Lecturer)

Alaska by Maggie Rogers

“I love the unique blend of folk and dance music in this song.  Initially, it's hard to imagine that combination, but this song pulls it together in a really compelling, catchy, fun way.”

Rhiannon McDaniel, Research Assistant

Amber by 311

“This song is best heard while watching the sun set behind the Oquirrhs (or really, any sunset) with good friends.  Bonus points if you’re all surfing that post-ride endorphin wave after a Wasatch mountain bike adventure!”

Julia Mills, Research Assistant/Analyst

Cold Heart by Elton John and Dua Lipa

“This is a recent personal favorite that is on EVERY radio station all the time—but can anyone really resist Elton John?

“And for good measure, I share a few from a my younger daughter, Kate.  When I think of music, I think of her.  On road trips or while ‘puzzling’ together, she regularly introduces me to an eclectic mix of sounds from artists that I rarely, if ever, hear on the radio.  So, obviously, I turned to her for a fun list of summer tunes.”

Dancing In the Street by Martha Reeves and The Vandellas

“This song is a bit old school, but I love the beat.  Whenever I hear it, I think of sunshine, fun, and summertime gatherings ‘…summer’s here and the time is right…’ for all the summer fun.”

Stephanie Dawson Pack, Marketing/PR Assistant

Grove is in the Heart by Deee-Lite

“This song is devoid of any redeeming qualities other than it’s so groovy.  Completely innocuous, cotton candy for the mind and soul, with a beat you can’t resist.”

Philip Osteen, Interim Dean

Island in the Sun by Weezer

“Besides having a summer related title, the song has very relaxing vibez.”

Emily Breen, Development Specialist

Oye by La Sonora Dinamita.

“This song is about joy and appreciating the little things in life.  Also, the instrumentation is irresistible to the body.”

Yvette González Coronado, Assistant Professor (Clinical)

Sing 2 Original Motion Picture Soundtrack by various artists

“I’m slightly embarrassed to admit this, but my summer road trip playlist will definitely include the soundtrack for the animated movie Sing 2.  It’s so much fun to be in the car with my nieces and nephews as we all sing along to these bouncy songs!”

Jennifer Nozawa, Manager, Marketing & Communications
