Overview
This event examines the role of phonics in addressing America’s early literacy crisis and its broader social implications. Featuring a screening of the documentary The Right to Read, the program highlights how early reading ability is closely tied to long-term outcomes such as education, employment, and justice involvement. The film centers on the work of activist Kareem Weaver, a teacher, and two families advocating for evidence-based reading instruction. A panel discussion with the filmmaker and College of Education experts follows, offering insights into the science of reading and strategies to support literacy as a critical civil rights issue.
