Application deadline is once every three years. The next application cycle will be during fall 2019 for the fall 2020 cohort.
This program runs simultaneously at the main University of Utah campus (Salt Lake) and the St. George campus.
Program Length: Three years
Credit Hours: 60
Students take courses for seven semesters, taking between four and ten credit hours a semester. All courses are held one or two evenings a week, typically Wednesday and Thursday evenings.
Practicum (field) is required during the second and third years. Practicum experiences will likely be during the day – evening or weekend hours are unlikely to be available for practicum. Practicum placement cannot be approved at the applicant’s place of employment.
Spreading the MSW program over more than two years does increase the overall cost of the program because of University of Utah tuition structures; however, students do meet requirements for federal financial aid within this program design.
Students admitted to the part-time evening program will not have the option of completing
a joint degree or graduate certificate.
The concentrations offered are the health and mental health concentrations, with elective courses based on cohort-identified areas of interest
During the first year, students take classes on Wednesday and Thursday evenings during fall and spring semesters. The first year curriculum prepares students for generalist practice and includes courses on clinical theory and practice, evidence-informed practice, professional ethics, human behavior and the social environment, diversity and self-reflexive practice, and social justice, human rights, and macro practice.
The second year curriculum prepares students for practice in health or mental health settings and with specific client populations. Students also combine newly learned skills in an agency setting through field placements (also known as “practicum”). Practicum occurs during fall and spring semesters, with students completing 450 hours of field training in their practicum sites.
In the third year of the program, students take evening elective classes and complete 600 hours in a second practicum placement during fall and spring semesters.
