NAMIWalks Utah Volunteer Opportunity

NAMI Utah is one of more than 650 NAMI affiliates nationwide that provide free, peer-led courses, support groups, suicide prevention training, and a HelpLine to individuals and families affected by mental illness. In 2025, NAMI Utah served 5,000+ people through these no-cost programs and services.

NAMI Utah is reaching out to explore a volunteer partnership with the School of Social Work. We understand many social work students seek meaningful opportunities to complete community engagement or service-learning hours, and we would love to offer a role that is both impactful and closely aligned with the values and skills of the profession.

About NAMIWalks Utah

NAMIWalks is our largest annual community event—a festive charity walk that raises awareness, combats stigma, and helps fund NAMI Utah’s no-cost mental health resources. Last year, 500+ people attended NAMIWalks Utah to show visible community support for mental health. This year’s walk will take place Saturday, May 16 at Veterans Memorial Park in West Jordan.  The walk is much more than a charity walk - it is a joyous family-oriented event with free refreshments, performance, and group activities for all ages and even for pets! (We’ve attached an event flyer for your reference and for sharing.)

Volunteer Opportunity for Social Work Students

We are seeking student volunteers who would be interested in helping with community outreach in the weeks leading up to NAMIWalks. Specifically, students would:

  • Visit medical facilities and community organizations such as schools and senior centers (with support and coordination from NAMI Utah)
  • Deliver brief, prepared remarks about NAMI Utah services and resources, helping to raise awareness of the availability of free mental health resources in Utah
  • Share information about NAMIWalks Utah and invite staff, clients, and families to participate. In some cases, help to register walk participants on-line on site

We will provide training, talking points, materials, and staff support to ensure students feel confident and prepared. Volunteer hours can be documented as needed.
