Undergraduate Student Research Opportunity

The Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) is seeking a student to assist in an impactful project.

Project Title: Qualitative Data Analysis Project on Equity, Diversity, Inclusion in Higher Education

Project Description:Social movements such as Black Lives Matter, Stop Asian Hate, and #Black in the Ivory sparked efforts by and on behalf of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) to cogently address racial equity and social justice in academia. Typically, BIPOC graduate students experience more profound challenges in accessing funding, mentorship, and building meaningful professional relationships (Griffin et. al., 2016). Further, some experience acute levels of trauma, anxiety, and financial stress adjusting to new academic, social, and cultural environments. Thus, there is a pressing need for colleges and universities to implement culturally relevant programs and evidence-based evaluation practices that address equity gaps. This research project provides opportunities for undergraduate students to work on data analysis of focus groups in an effort to better understand the needs of students and impact of services and programs provided by the Graduate School Diversity Office. This research effort, sponsored by the Graduate School Diversity Office, is part of larger institutional efforts to center equity and social justice.

Student Role:   Extensive mentorship provided concerning the research process, opportunity to work with a diverse team of students and professors, as well as potential opportunities to present at undergraduate research forum and participate in co-authorship of presentations and publications that result from the work. Training regarding data analysis, participation in research team meetings, data analysis of qualitative data,  writing reports, writing literature reviews for peer-reviewed publication, presentation of results at Undergraduate Research Symposium.
