Job Summary

The Office of Orientation & Transition has the primary focus of assisting new students and their families as they transition to the University through comprehensive programs that take place throughout the calendar year. These include New Student Orientation, Swoop Camp Extended Orientation, Weeks of Welcome, and Parent & Family Programs. To support these efforts, the Office of Orientation & Transition hires a Graduate Student Intern that works as part of the professional team within the office. This position
provides graduate students interested in the field of higher education and orientation, transition, and retention (OTR) with a practical setting to apply the theories and knowledge they are learning through their coursework.
 
  • $5000 total stipend (pre-tax) distributed on a bi-monthly basis beginning May 22, 2023 and ending August 3, 2023.
  • Housing provided on the university campus for the period of May 4, 2023 to August 4, 2023.
  • Meal stipend provided through campus “dining dollars” (usable at campus food providers), in addition to meals included with orientation activities.

Responsibilities

The Graduate Student Intern will aid with the coordination and implementation of Orientation for our new first-year and transfer students and their families. This position will be expected to work 40 hours per week during the summer. Start and end dates are flexible, but preference will be given to candidates who can begin on or before May 4th, 2023. The position is expected to end on or before August 3, 2023. This position will entail working with the Assistant Directors and Director of Orientation and Transition to execute the following duties and responsibilities:
  • Serve as a staff member within the Office of Orientation & Transition, and as such represent the office, the Division of Academic Affairs, and the University of Utah with professionalism and good judgment
  • Help supervise 4 Orientation Team Leaders and up to 30+ Orientation Leaders
  • Assist with the facilitation of training for Orientation Leaders (OL Retreat & Intensive Training)
  • Assist with the implementation of each Orientation (New Student and Parent & Family) sessions for first year and transfer students, helping welcome over 6000 new students and over 3000 family members to campus
  • Present New Student Orientation sessions as assigned
  • Work with Orientation Leaders to plan and organize small group activities during New Student Orientation
  • Respond to day-to-day inquiries via oral and written communication with new students, parents and other campus partners
  • Serve as a role model for student staff and incoming students
  • Analyze New Student Orientation assessment on a regular basis
  • Help plan the Orientation Leader Banquet
  • Serve as an on-site resource and first night responder in residence halls during overnight programs
  • Attend meetings with stakeholders; as needed
  • Other duties as assigned
