Social Service Worker

Job Summary

The Division of Epidemiology’s Program for Addiction Research, Clinical Care, Knowledge and Advocacy (PARCKA) is seeking a Social Service Worker to join our team. PARCKA is an interdisciplinary team aiming to improve the lives of those affected by substance use.
This position is in a research setting with the primary responsibility of providing consented participants with information to enhance their ability to make appropriate health care choices and encouraging treatment adherence for substance use and misuse. The incumbent works with the clinical team in reviewing treatment plans to ensure continuity of care.

This position is considered Category IIA: Not required on campus and has the ability to telework remotely for the duration of the University of Utah’s response to COVID-19. An employee hired into this role will be responsible for providing space, telephone, printing, networking and/or internet capabilities at the telecommute location and agree to the terms of the University of Utah campus and Health Academics COVID-19 Telecommuting Agreement.

Essential Functions

1. Develops and coordinates research participant treatment plans following a manualized intervention.
2. Provides information to participants regarding available options and resources.
3. Interprets social, psychological, emotional and family problems to principal investigator and research team members.
4. Provides emotional support for participants.
5. Records and documents participant information including producing reports and following intervention timeline for a randomized clinical trial.
6. Assists the research team with appointment setting, visits and meetings.
7. Serves as a liaison with state agencies, providers, families and community resources for the patient population.
8. An understanding of research protocols and procedures.
9. May travel to a variety of sites both within and outside the University campus to obtain data.
10. Conducts participant study procedures, including consent and assessments.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or a related field plus two years of clinical experience in a hospital or clinic preferably in mental health related services or equivalency required, licensed as a Social Service Worker in the State of Utah required; Basic Life Support Health Care Provider card or obtain one within one month of hire; demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.

The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient’s status and provide care as described in the department’s policies and procedures manual.

This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. We protect our patients, coworkers and community by requiring all patient-sensitive employees to be immunized according to CDC standards and hospital policy. Limited exemptions may be made for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs that object to vaccinations.


Master’s Degree in Social Work or Psychology, 1-year of case management and research experience is preferred. A valid Utah driver’s license may be required in certain departments.
