Deb Daniels’ Legacy of Uplifting Others

Like so many others throughout our community, the College of Social Work grieves the
recent passing of Debra “Deb” Daniels, a respected advocate, devoted lifelong activist, caring mentor, and beloved social
worker. She passed away on August 14, 2026.
Deb earned a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) from Utah State University in 1979 and
a Master of Social Work (MSW) from the University of Utah in 1984. As a licensed clinical
social worker, she served as a clinician, advocate, and leader at the YWCA and the
Rape Recovery Center. She also co-founded the Salt Lake City-based training organization
Umoja (Swahili for “unity”), which provided classes on risk reduction, communication,
and social challenges.
In 2003, Deb became director of the University of Utah Women’s Resource Center, a role she held for 17 years, transforming its programs and the services offered to the whole campus community. She served as an instructor and co-facilitated workshops for the College of Social Work, and guest lectured in numerous other University of Utah colleges and departments.
“She had a huge impact on many people and, in particular, women,” said Dr. Cynthia Sanders, the College of Social Work's associate dean for academic affairs. “I volunteered many years ago at the YWCA, benefiting from her mentorship and kindness. I credit her with my journey of becoming a social worker.”
In 2010, Deb and longtime friend and colleague Dr. Kai Medina-Martinez established
the Daniels Martinez Endowed BSW Scholarship in the College of Social Work. Endowed in 2023, the scholarship carries forward Deb’s
legacy by helping future social workers pursue their education and continuing her
lifelong commitment to a kinder and more just world.
“It was an honor establishing the BSW scholarship with Debra,” said Kai. “At the time, there was no other BSW scholarship in this College of Social Work. We wanted to acknowledge the importance of a bachelor’s degree and, in addition to providing monetary support through the scholarship, we offered mentorship to the students at their discretion. Debra had a passion and commitment to supporting not just social work students, but all students…. I will miss you every day, my friend.”
Among many other honors, Deb’s extraordinary determination and service was recognized with:
- The NAACP Salt Lake Branch’s Rosa Parks Award
- The University of Utah’s Linda K. Amos Award for Distinguished Services to Women
- The YWCA Outstanding Achievement Award
- The Utah Women’s Political Caucus’ Susa Young Gates Award
- The Inclusion Center for Community and Justice’s Humanitarian Award
Through her compassion, wisdom, and tireless dedication to equality and opportunity,
Deb touched countless lives. In her honor, her family invites donations to the Daniels Martinez Endowed BSW Scholarship, furthering Deb’s lasting legacy of compassion.
