Graduation FAQs

The graduation ceremony typically lasts between 1-1.5 hours.

All guests are free, but tickets are required to guarantee a seat at Kingsbury Hall. Graduates can collect tickets from Emily Breen in room 209 of the College of Social Work during ticket distribution times that will be scheduled during class breaks in the weeks prior to convocation. The number of guest tickets available to each student will depend on the total amount of graduates walking. Each student is guaranteed four tickets and may request more tickets that will be disbursed based on availability. Tickets only guarantee a seat until 10 minutes after the ceremony has begun. Doors will open for social work convocation seating approximately 45 minutes before the start of the convocation ceremony. Early arrival is recommended. There will be a standby line for guests without tickets that will be seated after the ceremony has begun. There will also be remote viewing location with a live stream and additional seating for non-ticketed guests in Gardner Hall, the building adjacent to Kingsbury Hall.

No, we do not have a graduation rehearsal. Graduates are advised to be at the Park Building on time to receive instructions. College of Social Work personnel will be available to guide them through the ceremony.

President’s Circle will be congested and parking is limited. We highly recommend parking at the Merrill Engineering parking lot and taking the shuttle or walking to Kingsbury Hall.

Graduation will NOT be canceled if it is raining. Graduates will be directed to meet in the basement of Kingsbury Hall, entering through the West door.

Kingsbury Hall is located on the University of Utah Campus at 1395 East President’s Circle.

Kingsbury Hall's Location

The last event in the ceremony is the recessional, in which all participants (the dean, the faculty, and the graduates) leave their seating area. Graduates will proceed all the way out of the building and can meet their guests on the east side of Kingsbury Hall.

The front row of seats is reserved for guests that would like to come up and take a picture, then immediately return to their seats.

Some students have donated their regalia, so there are a few to loan out. The supply is limited and is loaned on a first-come basis. Please contact the Graduation Coordinators ( to check out a cap and gown. Donated regalia are greatly appreciated.

You will not receive your actual diploma at the graduation ceremony. It will be mailed to you after grades for the semester are posted to your official record.

After pictures at the Park Building, the graduates will line up in alphabetical order within their degree class. Those sitting on the stage and/or participating in the program will be grouped separately and walk at the end of the graduates. Please stay in alphabetical order while seated at Kingsbury Hall, as there is no room or time to change order. Graduates should sit next to each other and not leave an empty seat, as space is limited and the empty rows will be opened up to guests. Once you are in your row, please remain standing until the dean invites you to be seated. Diploma professional picture – Please be prepared to stop and pose for the photographer when you receive your diploma. You will be emailed photo proofs and ordering instructions, however you are under no obligation to purchase the photos.

  • Choose footwear that will enable you to navigate narrow and steep stairways and stand for long periods of time.
  • Do not wear green on the outside of your gown, as it will interfere with the photographer’s green screen.

You will wear the tassel on the right side of the cap. After you receive your diploma, you may move it to the left side of the cap.

We encourage family and friends to take pictures before you arrive or after the ceremony. A photographer from the College of Social Work will be there to take a group picture and will post it on the web.

You should still be able to purchase regalia, depending on their supply. Please check with the University Campus Store (801-581-6326). For more information, visit
