University of Utah’s General Commencement
The University of Utah General Commencement is the campus-wide opening ceremony for graduation, kicking off many events across campus and serving as a collective celebration of the University community and the collective accomplishments of the graduating class. Commencement will be held on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. This University-wide ceremony will confer all College degrees (except degrees awarded by the College of Law and School of Medicine) en masse. Social work degrees will be accepted by the dean of the College of Social Work on behalf of social work graduates.
Graduates attending the General Commencement Ceremony should arrive in cap and gown by 5:00 p.m. in the parking lot south of Milton Bennion Hall. Groups will assemble in four separate lines by college and by degrees. Staff members from Student Affairs will be on hand to assist graduates. The processional will begin at 5:50 p.m. Guests should plan to be seated before 5:30 p.m. For more information, please visit the Commencement Information page.
The University of Utah College of Social Work’s Convocation Ceremony will be held at Kingsbury Hall on Friday, May 4, 2017, beginning at 9:00 a.m. All students participating in the ceremony will have ceremonial degrees conferred upon them (official diplomas will be sent to graduates via mail). Details below.
Live Streaming Video
The College of Social Work’s Convocation Ceremony is streamed live through this page. During the event, click on the “live stream” play button. Video of the event is available for free download a day or two after the ceremony.
*Please note, the video may not be available yet, Teaching and Learning Technologies (TLT) will upload as soon as possible.*
Reader cards are used to announce a graduate’s name during the Convocation Ceremony and to identify students in photos.
Graduates will receive notification when reader cards are available in early April, which will be located at the front desk of the College of Social Work’s main office (SW 101). Reader cards must be completed and submitted to SW 101 by May 1st. PhD reader cards are completed by their office.
Please note: the Convocation Ceremony program lists graduates by degree and semester of graduation. This information goes to print by the end of March, so if students have not applied for graduation by then, their names will not be listed in the printed program.
Cap and Gown Orders
College of Social Work graduates can purchase a black gown and a black cap with a light yellow/maize tassel, the MSW hoods (light yellow/maize trim), and PhD hoods at the University Campus Store (Bookstore) (801-581-6326). Special caps and gowns are also available if desired. The Graduates are encouraged to pre-order the regalia at the Bookstore’s web page and pick up their order during the University Campus Store’s Graduation Regalia Fair, held at the end of March. Regalia is required for both Convocation and Commencement.
Line-up of Graduates and Processional
To participate in the College of Social Work’s Convocation Ceremony, graduates should arrive (in cap and gown) in front of the Park Building, located on President’s Circle, by 8:00 a.m. The tassel is worn on the right side of the cap and moved to the left side after the graduate accepts his/her diploma. The PhD hood should not be worn, but should be folded and carried over an arm.
BSW graduates should gather on the north end of the plaza. MSW graduates should gather in the center of the plaza, in front of the steps of the Park Building. PhD graduates should gather to the south of the Park Building steps.
Graduates will participate in a group photo, receive final instructions, and receive reader cards. Photographers from the College will organize the group pictures. Immediately following the group photo, students will line up in alphabetical order for the processional. College of Social Work personnel will be available to guide graduates in the final line-up. The order of the processional (which begins promptly at 8:45 a.m.) will be as follows: BSW, MSW, PhD, those to be seated on the stage who are participating in the convocation program, and faculty.
Kingsbury doors will open around 8:15 a.m. The processional begins promptly at 8:45 a.m. Guests are asked to avoid the entrance and lobby of Kingsbury Hall during the processional.
In the event of stormy weather, students should go directly to the west side of Kingsbury Hall and meet inside the building on the lower level.
PhD Hooding Procedures (PhD Students Only)
The director of doctoral studies will read the names of PhD graduates and the hooding will be done by the CSW dean and the committee chair.
Island Photography has been authorized to photograph all students, as individuals, and of the official awarding of the diploma and/or hooding ceremony. Please note that graduates are under no obligation to purchase these photographs. Using the information provided on reader cards, Island Photography will email graduates a secure link and a PIN to view and order photos. Graduates will also have the option to register the email addresses of friends and relatives so they will be provided with a direct link to proofs. Guest seating at Kingsbury Hall is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. The College of Social Work does not issue tickets, but requests graduates limit their guests to five guests per graduate, in an effort to cut down on over-crowding. The academic processional will begin promptly at 8:45 a.m. Families and guests should be seated by that time and remain in the auditorium during the processional. Guests are asked to avoid the entrance and lobby of Kingsbury Hall during the processional. Please be aware that Kingsbury Hall will be available for seating beginning at approximately 8:15 a.m. Inside Kingsbury Hall, seating will be roped off for graduates. Family members and guests will not be allowed to sit in the roped off areas. NOTE: the seating in the front row is reserved for guests who wish to take pictures and immediately return to their seats.
