Application Deadline: September 30, 2018 (priority) and November 1 (final) for start date of May 2019 (every three years)
Admission decisions announced no later than January 15
In 2012, the College of Social Work began offering an MSW Program located in the St. George area through the University of Utah’s extension program. This program option is technology-assisted and delivered through a combination of distance technology through the Utah Education Network (EDNET).
Only students admitted during or after the academic year in which the program is granted candidacy will be recognized as having graduated from an accredited program. Students admitted prior to the academic year in which the program was granted candidacy will not be recognized as having graduated from a CSWE-accredited social work education program.
Students who have a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree are eligible to apply for the Advanced Standing Program, which reduces the number of credits required to earn an MSW degree to 45 credit hours.
The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accreditation standards require that BSW programs include academic content comparable to what is taught in the first-year of MSW programs. Thus, the University of Utah’s MSW Program has developed an option for students who have earned a bachelor’s degree in social work from a CSWE accredited program. Students who have earned a BSW degree may apply to the MSW program as Advanced Standing students. (Click here for a directory of CSWE accredited social work programs.) Students with BSW degrees are encouraged to apply to the Advanced Standing program. They may also apply to the three-year MSW Distance Program if they wish, giving them additional learning opportunities. If choosing to apply to the three-year program, they cannot also apply to the Advanced Standing Program in the same year and need to know that no first year MSW coursework will be waived.
Only students with a BSW earned in the last 7 years by the application deadline may apply for the MSW Advanced Standing Distance Program in St. George. Applicants who have earned a BSW degree more than 7 years ago prior are required to apply for the 60 credit hour MSW program.
Students complete the Advanced Standing Program in St. George during three consecutive semesters over one year, beginning summer. During their first semester (Summer), students take required bridge and electives. They continue with core and elective classes as well as practicum for the next two semesters (fall and spring). Summer courses will be taught during the day, while Fall and Spring courses are offered online and during the evening. Students complete 600 practicum hours during the day.
The Advanced Standing curriculum prepares students for practice with specific areas/populations. Only the health and mental health concentrations are offered in the St. George program. Elective courses will be selected based on cohort-identified areas of interest.
